The rules around robot modernization are changing

EU Machinery Regulation: shield with checkmark inside a circle of stars over a blue-tinted Kawasaki industrial robot

In 2026 and 2027, CE marking expands and is renewed in a big way, for both machine safety and cyber security. For anyone running an industrial robot, that raises a practical question: what is the smartest moment to modernize?

Our answer: if at all possible, commissioning should be completed before 20 January 2027.

Two regulations are tightening the requirements

On 20 January 2027, the new EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. There is no transition period after that date. The Regulation also adds a clearer definition of substantial modification: if you substantially modify existing machinery, you may be treated as its manufacturer, with the full set of obligations that comes with it.

The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) follows. Its reporting obligations already apply from September 2026, and its main requirements apply in full from 11 December 2027.

Why timing matters now

If the automation system being modernized is commissioned before 20 January 2027, the project can be carried out with less bureaucracy, which means avoiding additional costs.

After that date, the same upgrade may mean a new conformity assessment and heavier documentation. The robot is the same. The paperwork is not.

What is a robot retrofit?

Industrial robot modernization means upgrading an existing robot to meet current production, safety and digitalization requirements without having to replace the entire robot system. In many cases, it is significantly more cost-effective than purchasing a new robot.

A retrofit is often justified when:

  • Support for electrical parts from the OEM is ending.

  • Mechanical spare parts are becoming difficult or expensive to obtain.

  • New production requirements exceed the robot's current capabilities.

  • A complete automation line investment cannot be economically justified.

What you get

  • Extends the robot's service life by up to 15 years

  • Improves productivity and uptime

  • Reduces spare-part and obsolescence risks

  • Enhances safety compliance

  • Improves energy efficiency

  • Enables integration into modern digital manufacturing environments

  • Prepares your system for CRA requirements, which apply in full from December 2027

Your next step

A modernization project needs time for assessment, planning and commissioning. The earlier you start, the more room you have to land inside the 20 January 2027 window.
